Part-A : Brief Question
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Ten million animals are trapped for their fur each year. The United States, Canada, and Russia produce most of the world’s wild fur. Every time an animal is trapped for its fur, approximately two “non-target” animals are also caught. These non-target animals include squirrels, opossums, dogs, cats and even endangered species and birds of prey that are attracted to the food around the snares or inside the cages.
The steel jaw leg-hold trap is the most common kind of trap used by fur trappers, followed by the wire snare and the Conibear body-gripping trap which crushes the animal.
Eighty-eight countries and five US states have banned the leg-hold trap because it is so cruel and because it simply traps any animal that steps into it. However, the US Congress has not yet banned this device, despite surveys showing that 74% of Americans oppose it.
Animals are left in these traps for between one and three days, and sometimes longer. The animals often die from starvation, hypothermia, dehydration or an attack by another animal. Otherwise, the trapper shoots them, stomps them or clubs them.
Many animals chew off their own limbs in a desperate attempt at escape. This is especially common in raccoons. A 1980 study found that as many as one out of every four raccoons caught in a leg hold trap would chew its foot off to escape. Some companies manufacture padded leg hold traps to make them seem less cruel. Animals caught in padded traps are still exposed to the weather and predators until the trapper returns to kill them.
Research has shown that padded traps cause injury to 97% of the coyotes that they ensnare. Many animals knock out their teeth as they bite at the jaws of the traps.
There are 150,000 trappers in the United States. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan are the main trapping states.

Part-B : Passage for Practice
Read the passage and answer the questions below:
Loneliness is seldom alleviated by marriage. People who marry each other so they will stop being lonely often discover that the excruciating loneliness of all is shared with each other.
There are three main types of loneliness. First, there is the loneliness of the individual who simply has not learned how to get along with people. When such lonely people marry each other, each one has high expectations of his spouse. Neither realizes that the other is paralyzed by the same limitations as he is. As a result, both of them wind up lonelier than ever. The TV and movie play Marty, where a shy, inarticulate man meets a shy, inarticulate woman and they find happiness together, is about on a par with Cinderella, when it comes to realism.
A second type of loneliness is found in people who are very opposite of those in the first group. They have bright personalities and well-developed social skills and are obsessed with the desire to be popular at all costs. Such people make good sales and advertising personnel and social leaders. Many of them give the appearance of being ‘sexy’, when in reality they may be sexually unskilled or frigid, even though they may have had a number of affairs with the opposite sex.
This type of person finds it difficult to be intimate with anyone whom he does not feel to be his inferior. The fact remains, however, that in marriage — as in relations with people in general — unless one person can deal with another on a basis of equality, he will be lonely, no matter how outgoing and what a good mixer he may appear to be.
A third kind of loneliness is seen in the type of person who must be best in whatever it is he does. Many successful people in the arts, industry and business fall into this category. Often they are kind and loving only to those who can be useful to them. People of this sort trust no one to do anything well, suspecting that almost everyone — even their spouses — will stand in the way of their headlong rush towards success.
They require virtually everything and everyone to revolve around themselves. If they are glamorous or powerful enough, they may be able to get mates who will put up with this for a while. However, such marriages don’t last, and they try again and again, drifting from one marriage to another, becoming more and more suspicious and more and more lonely.
Answer any five questions:
2. What are the types of loneliness mentioned in the passage?
3. What are the causes of loneliness in a man’s life?
4. How do people overcome loneliness by marriage?
5. What kind of person suffers from the first type of loneliness?
6. What is second type of loneliness?
7. Summarise the third type of loneliness.
8. What are the dark sides of loneliness?
9. What is the principal mode of development in the passage? Justify your answer.

Sweet and low, sweet and low,
Wind of the western sea,
Low, low, breathe and blow,
Over the rolling waters go,
Come from the dying moon, and blow,
Blow him again to me;
While my little one, while my pretty one, sleeps.
Sleep and rest, sleep and rest,
Father will come to thee soon;
Rest, rest, on mother’s breast,
Father will come to thee soon;
Father will come to his babe in the nest,
Silver sails all out of the west

Sleep, my little one, sleep, my pretty one, sleep.
